Excess mass and dimension operations

Although it is necessary to minimise damage to structures and pavements by fixing regulation mass and dimension limits, it is also recognised that some concessions must be given to the transport industry to allow the movement by road of heavy and large vehicles and loads.

Regulation mass and dimension limits are detailed in the Transport Operations (Road Use Management – Mass, Dimensions and Loading) Regulation 2005.

This management seeks to minimise impacts on the safety of road users and the impact on traffic and road assets on Queensland's road network.

Excess mass movements

Management of excess mass is either by the Excess mass guideline (Form 11) or an excess mass permit issued through one of our permit management offices.

Some specified classes of heavy mobile cranes and special purpose vehicles are eligible for excess mass permits of extended duration and radius when they participate in the Intelligent Access Program.

Conditions of operation for heavy mobile cranes and special purpose vehicles are located at Excess mass and dimension conditions.

Excess dimension movements

Excess dimension travel is based on the requirements of Excess dimension guideline (Form 4). Travel in excess of 4.6m width requires a Letter of No Objection issued by a Main Roads permit management office.

An excess dimension permit is required for travel over 5.5m wide and/or 5.0m high. These permits are issued by the Queensland Police Service.
