Heavy vehicle rest areas

Heavy vehicle rest areas are important for alleviating driver fatigue, which is a major safety issue on Australian roads. The Department of Transport and Main Roads is committed to ensuring that heavy vehicle drivers arrive at their destination safely. This commitment is demonstrated through the development of a Heavy Vehicle Rest Area Program that is delivering new rest areas and improved facilities at existing rest areas across the state.

Forward program

The department’s $58.3 million Heavy Vehicle Rest Area Program will deliver at least 56 rest areas and 25 new stopping places throughout Queensland by 2013/14.

Collaboration between the federal government and the department has resulted in $30 million being allocated by the federal government under the Nation Building Program to fund important new and upgraded heavy vehicle rest areas and stopping places on the Bruce and Warrego Highways.

This commitment from the federal government forms a key component of the Heavy Vehicle Rest Area Program which has been funded through several state and federal funding sources. Endorsement of the Nation Building funds ensures the program will continue to deliver more sites over the next three financial years.

Program delivery

The $58.3 million program has already seen the delivery of over 20 new rest areas valued at over $16 million with site locations selected through detailed strategic planning and assessment by the department in consultation with the transport industry.

Industry consultation

TMR has worked closely with the transport industry through groups such as the Heavy Vehicle Rest Area Consultative Group to identify and recommend the development of strategically placed new and upgraded sites to ensure a safer network for heavy vehicle drivers.

These important sites will support the need for heavy vehicle drivers to stop and rest for prescribed periods, particularly during longer haul trips.
