P4.4 Establish advisory group

Guidance

The advisory group exists to provide the project sponsor and the project manager with strategic advice. Members of this group should be selected from major internal and external stakeholder groups for their ability to provide strategic, business, specialist technical and financial advice. Customer organisations should also be represented on the group. Consideration should be given to including a representative from major external stakeholder groups who are essential to the successful achievement of the project's objectives.

Each member needs to be aware that their role is an advisory one. Where more than one organisation either contributes money or will directly use the project output, then the heads of these organisations may form a separate customer or steering group. The existence of a customer steering group will not remove the need for an advisory group, which may sometimes be called a technical committee in projects of a technical nature.

Responsibility

The sponsor is responsible for this task.
