Taxi security cameras

In October 2004, the Queensland Government announced it would fund the supply and installation of security cameras in approximately 2700 taxis in Queensland. It is compulsory for security cameras to be fitted to taxis in the 20 'taxi service contract areas' located throughout Queensland. Now all but a few of the 3253 taxis in Queensland have security cameras fitted.

The mandatory taxi service contract areas are:

  • Bribie Island
  • Brisbane
  • Bundaberg
  • Cairns
  • Gladstone
  • the Gold Coast
  • Gympie
  • Hervey Bay
  • Innisfail
  • Ipswich
  • Mackay
  • Maryborough
  • Mount Isa
  • Redcliffe
  • Rockhampton
  • the Sunshine Coast
  • Toowoomba
  • Townsville
  • Warwick
  • Yeppoon

On 9 September 2005, the Queensland Government announced VerifEye Aust Pty Ltd* had been contracted to supply and install security cameras in taxis.

The Queensland Government funded the supply and installation of security cameras to most taxi license owners/holders operating within contract areas by the end of December 2006. With the government's ongoing commitment to improving the safety and security for taxi drivers and passengers, on 28 December 2006, the Queensland Government announced the expansion of taxi security camera systems to the remainder of regional Queensland.

Taxis are the one transport service where the fare is paid at the end of the journey. The installation of security cameras discourages fare evasion and makes drivers safer. Passengers can feel safer too, knowing their taxi is under continual surveillance.
