Taxi security cameras advertising campaign

On 30 June 2010, the Queensland Government's funding of the supply and installation of security cameras to taxi service license holder/operators concluded, resulting in the installation of cameras into almost all of the taxis in the Queensland fleet. This process was part of an A$8.3 million Queensland Government commitment and has successfully improved the safety and security for taxi drivers and passengers.

Taxi security cameras provide reassurance to the community and act as a deterrent to the criminal minority. Identifying offenders is an important part of the system and assists in the prosecution of criminal activity, such as fare evasion, robbery, verbal and physical abuse. Every person entering a taxi with a security camera fitted, at any time day or night, will have their image recorded.

Statistics

Research conducted by the University of Queensland in 2006 revealed 76.4 per cent of taxi drivers with security cameras installed felt safer and 78.2 per cent of drivers considered the camera system to be an appropriate deterrent to crime.  Ensuring safety for taxi drivers and passengers is our highest priority.
