Traffic control permit

Before persons submit an application for a Traffic Control permit, they must have previously obtained permission from the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) to occupy the State Controlled Road (SCR).

Road Corridor Permit

An applicant occupying any SCR for any purpose must first submit a Road Corridor Permit Application form. This could include:

  • performing maintenance
  • undertaking construction
  • conducting special events
  • displaying signs

This form is available on the Road Corridor Webpage.

This applies to any part of the road reserve including footpath, kerb and channelling, nature strip, traffic island and road carriageway.

Traffic Control Permit

Having previously applied for and been granted permission to gain access to SCRs, the applicant or their authorised representative is then required to apply for permission to perform any required lane closures and traffic control upon the roads nominated. Traffic Control Companies working on SCRs must be registered under the Traffic Management Registration Scheme.

A Traffic Control Permit is necessary to ensure:

  • that the work carried out or the conducted event can be performed safely with due care shown to both workers and all road users.
  • protection of TMR assets.
  • the times at which the task is to be performed is such that any lane closure causes minimal disruption to traffic flow.
  • that all traffic control activities are to be carried out in accordance with the latest version of the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices Part 3.

When making an application for traffic control, the applicant:

  • must complete an application form and provide all mandatory documentation
  • must give at least seven (7) working days for the processing of an application
  • must comply by the conditions of application and the permit conditions and must not undertake any activities without the requisite permit
  • must notify the Brisbane Metropolitan Traffic Management Centre (BMTMC) by telephone (07 3292 6095) at the following times:
    • on arrival at site prior to implementation of the Traffic Management Plan
    • immediately that there is any unexpected disruption to traffic or a traffic incident at or near the site
    • immediately prior to departure of site after all traffic control devices are removed
  • must obtain a police permit prior to commencing the traffic control activity
  • must notify the local authority(s) and emergency services of the traffic control activity must engage a qualified traffic controller to undertake the traffic control
