Rail corridor direction statement

Image of a coal train Rail corridor direction statements provide a vision for the management and ongoing development of the rail network and assist in the achievement of the government's objectives, including those relating to regional development.

Transport and Main Roads will develop each rail corridor direction statement initially as a proposal for consideration. It is intended that rail corridor direction proposals will be developed to assist government in its assessment of transport system priorities.

Rail corridor direction studies will be guided by the following principles:

  • the study area must contain a significant portion of the origin and destination points of the freight and passenger traffic on the corridor
  • geographical features and administrative boundaries (for example, local government boundaries) should not be the sole determinants of study area boundaries
  • expectations of future freight and/or passenger traffic on each corridor should be realistic
  • a potential for growth in rail demand and/or cross-modal shifts and/or competitive service provision should exist
  • the effectiveness of rail corridor studies will be enhanced when they interact with current government policies, plans and studies, such as Integrated Regional Transport Plans and the State Infrastructure Plan, without compromising safety and rail operations.
