Transit oriented developments

Transit oriented developments are high-density, mix-used developments which are specifically designed and located to maximise access to public transport. They are typically built over, or close to, railway and busway stations.

An example of a transit oriented development in Queensland is the proposed Varsity Station Village.

Transit oriented developments are a key policy of the South East Queensland Regional Plan and support the delivery of a range of key government priorities relating to climate change, housing affordability and congestion.

Developments over rail corridors can help revitalise neighbourhoods or commercial districts, and create dynamic and liveable mixed-use environments. From a transport perspective, a transit oriented development can also enhance station facilities and make travel via public transport a more attractive option.

Transport and Main Roads is responsible for facilitating and negotiating private sector investment in transit oriented developments. This includes identifying and assessing risks for each proposed site, determining feasibility as well as any opportunities to upgrade station infrastructure.

We work collaboratively with a number of stakeholders such as Department of Infrastructure and Planning, QR Limited, TransLink Transit Authority, local councils and developers.
