Non-rail and non-operational transport service contracts
A number of former/inactive rail corridors are strategically retained and managed by the Department of Transport and Main Roads. Management arrangements are governed by contracts with providers of maintenance services (presently QR Limited and RoadTek).
All former corridors are managed to ensure that:
- government risk exposure is minimised and manageable
- the land is available for alternative and compatible uses
- there are appropriate tenure arrangements
- the land is adequately maintained according to community standards adjacent to the corridor.
In conjunction with other Queensland Government agencies, the Department of Transport and Main Roads is pursing opportunities to lease former rail corridors to interested local authorities on a long-term basis for compatible community and transport purposes, for example, walking, riding and bicycle trails.
