Sustainable transport

The Queensland Government established the Office of Sustainable Transport to develop transport policies that balance and integrate economic, environmental and social needs to deliver a sustainable transport system.  Initial areas of focus for the Office include climate change, building resilience to oil vulnerability and related issues.

What is sustainable transport?

Photo of two bicycle riders ridingOne definition of a sustainable transport system is one that:

  • meets the basic access and equity needs of individuals and societies
  • societies can afford to construct, access and maintain
  • offers choice, convenience and supports economic activity
  • limits pollution and waste and consumption of resources to sustainable levels
  • is resilient and capable of being continued with minimal long term effect on the environment.

For Queenslanders, sustainable transport allows for everyday activities such as:

  • visiting our friends and families
  • getting to work and conducting our business
  • accessing the goods, services, and facilities we need.

A sustainable transport system enables Queenslanders to benefit from all of these activities and many more while minimising adverse environmental, economic, and social impacts.
