Government Champion — Northern Peninsula Area (Cape York)
The Queensland Government Champion Program commenced in 2002 as a key initiative of the Meeting Challenges, Making Choices Policy. The aim of the program is to assist communities by:
- reducing red tape, navigate bureaucracy and overcome barriers by utilising government networks
- implementing whole of government responses to critical issues
- harnessing combined agency resources to provide effective, efficient and integrated service delivery responses
- linking with the private sector to create jobs and other opportunities.
The responsibility of the Government Champion for the Northern Peninsula Area role began in Main Roads in 2002 at the commencement of the Government Champion Program in that year. The role was allocated by the Premier to the Director-General of Main Roads. Following the amalgamation of the Department of Main Roads and Queensland Transport in 2009, the role has been held by the Associate Director-General.
Transport and Main Roads is co-Government Champion for the Northern Peninsula Area communities of Injinoo, Umagico, Bamaga, New Mapoon and Seisia. Because there are five places in this region under the local government of the Northern Peninsula Area Regional Council, another co-Government Champion is now provided by The Department of Justice and Attorney General.
