Getting a motorbike licence

You must have held a provisional, P1, P2 or open car (class C) licence for at least 1 year in the last 5 years before you can apply for a motorbike licence. This means motorbike riders have at least 2 years on-road driving experience before riding solo.

Your first motorbike licence will be for a class RE. You can apply for your class RE provisional or open licence through Q-Ride or by passing the Q-SAFE practical riding test.

You must hold your class RE learner licence for 6 months before you are eligible to apply for your class RE licence. You can start training with Q Ride as soon as you get your class RE learner licence. You do not need to hold your class RE learner licence for 6 months.
You must pass a practical riding test before you are issued with your class RE licence. Q-Ride is competency based. You will be assessed while learning to ride. You may apply for your class RE licence once you receive your Q-Ride certificate (competency declaration) from your Q-Ride provider.

You must hold a class RE provisional or open licence for at least 1 year before you can learn to ride a class R motorbike. You can apply for your class R licence through Q-Ride or by passing the Q-SAFE practical driving test on a class R motorbike.
