Road rules test
You can take the road rules test at a driver licensing issuing centre when you apply for your learner licence.
You can take the test as many times as necessary until you are successful and have passed the road rules test. However, you are only permitted to take one test per calendar day and a fee will apply for each attempt. You must pay a fee for each test.
Allow at least 30 minutes to complete your road rules test. Once you pass your road rules test, your result is valid for five years. If you wish to apply for an additional licence class, you may need to pass a specific road rules test for that class.
When you pass the road rules test and meet the licensing requirements, you may be eligible for the issue of a learner licence.
Sample road rules test questions and other essential information about safe movement of vehicles and the drivers of those vehicles are contained in the Your Keys to Driving in Queensland publication. This publication is a valuable source of information for learner drivers, their supervisors, existing licence holders and other members of the public wanting to refresh their knowledge of the road rules.
You can also prepare for your road rules test by visiting the practice road rules test page.
To update your knowledge of the Queensland Road Rules visit the Office of the Queensland Parliamentary Counsel website or purchase a copy of the Transport Operations (Road Use Management—Road Rules) Regulation 2009 from the Queensland Government Bookshop.
Class C (car)
There are 30 questions in the general road rules test. The questions have multiple choice answers. This means each question has a number of possible answers. You must mark the correct one.
The test has two main sections. In the first section, you must correctly answer nine out of the 10 questions. In the second section, you must correctly answer 18 out of the 20 questions.
Class RE or R (motorbike)
You need to correctly answer four out of the five additional questions specific to motorbikes to pass the test for a class RE motorbike learner licence.
If you already hold a class RE licence, you will not need to take a road rules test for a class R licence.
Class LR, MR, HR, HC or MC (heavy vehicle)
If you already hold a car or motorbike licence, you will only need to correctly answer eight out of the additional 10 questions applying to heavy vehicles to pass the test for a class LR, MR, HR, HC or MC learner licence.
If you already hold a heavy vehicle class of licence, you will not need to take a road rules test for a higher class of vehicle.
