Learning to ride motorbikes

Learning to ride a class RE motorbike

The first step you need to take before learning to ride a class RE motorbike on the road is to obtain a class RE learner licence.

You can prepare for your class RE learner licence test by completing the practice road rule test.

Your first motorbike learner licence, provisional or open licence will be a class RE licence.

Note: Since 1 July 2009, there have been changes to the types of motorbikes that may be ridden under a Queensland class RE motorbike licence. If you hold a class RE licence you are only authorised to ride a learner approved motorbike.

A learner approved motorbike means a production motorbike that is fitted with an electric motor, or has an internal combustion engine with an engine capacity of not more than 660 mL; and:

  • has a power to weight ratio of not more than 150 kW per tonne
  • has not been modified other than for an allowable modification
  • is stated to be a learner approved motorbike in a list kept by the chief executive and published on the department's website.

Learning to ride a class R motorbike

If you hold a Queensland class RE motorbike provisional or open licence, you are authorised to learn to ride a class R motorbike after you have held your class RE provisional or open licence for at least one year. See licence classes and codesupgrading to the next higher eligible class of motor vehicle and practical driving test for additional information.

Conditions that apply when learning to ride a class RE or class R motorbike

  • You must display an L-plate at the rear of the motorbike. Alternatively you may wear a vest clearly displaying a capital 'L'. L-plate offences carry penalties for both the learner and supervisor.
  • You must only be supervised by a person who holds an open licence for the class of vehicle you are learning to ride. They must have held this class of licence for at least one year.
  • You must not carry your supervisor as a pillion passenger on the motorbike. You may only carry a suitably licensed supervisor seated in the sidecar attached to the motorbike. If the motorbike does not have a sidecar, the supervisor may follow you at a safe distance on another motorbike or in another vehicle.
  • You must carry your class RE learner, provisional or open licence with you at all times when you are learning to ride and show it promptly to a police officer when required.
  • You must obey any conditions stated on your learner, provisional or open licence.
  • You must not drive under the influence of drugs
  • You must comply with the no alcohol limit (0.00). If you are found drink or drug driving, you will be fined and/or have your licence cancelled.
