Upgrading a licence to a higher class

The following information outlines what you need to do to upgrade your licence to a higher class.

How to apply for the next higher class of licence

To apply for the next higher class of licence, you must:

  • have held the lower class of licence for a stated period (see table below)
  • complete the Driver Licence Application/Renewal (form F3000)
  • show your evidence of identity documents
  • pass an eyesight test, if required
  • declare that you are medically fit to drive the class of vehicle (Note: if you have a medical condition that is likely to adversely affect your ability to drive or ride safely, you will be required to provide a medical certificate from your doctor stating that you are medically fit to drive or ride safely)
  • pay the road rules test fee and pass the test, if required
  • pay the practical driving test fee and book the test
  • pass the practical driving test (Note: if you pass the practical driving test, your current licence will be reissued free of charge showing the new class).
Note: You can apply for your motorcycle (class RE or R) provisional or open licence through Q-Ride or by passing the Q-SAFE practical riding test. If you are successful, your current licence will be reissued free of charge showing the new higher class.

** There are alternative ways of gaining an upgrade from a class HR or HC driver licence to MC driver licence.
