Upgrading a licence to a higher class

Upgrading your Queensland provisional or open licence to the next higher eligible class of licence allows you to drive or ride additional vehicle types

How to apply for the next higher class of licence

To apply for the next higher eligible class, you must:

  • have held the lower class of licence for a stated period (see table below)
  • complete the Driver Licence Application/Renewal (form F3000)
  • show your evidence of identity documents
  • pass an eyesight test, if required
  • declare that you are medically fit to drive the class of vehicle (Note: if you have a medical condition that is likely to adversely affect your ability to drive or ride safely, you will be required to provide a medical certificate from your doctor stating that you are medically fit to drive or ride safely)
  • pay the road rules test fee and pass the test, if required
  • pay the practical driving test fee and book the test
  • pass the practical driving test (Note: if you pass the practical driving test, your current licence will be reissued free of charge showing the new class).

Note: You may choose to obtain your motorbike (class RE or R) provisional or open licence through Q-Ride. Q-Ride is a competency based training and assessment program aimed at improving the quality of learner rider instruction.

Minimum holding periods

The following table sets out the minimum periods that you are required to hold a particular class of licence before you are eligible to progress to the next higher class of licence. This particular class of licence must have been held for the required holding period within the last five years of applying for the next higher class. This period may be a single continuous period or made up of a number of individual periods. Any time your licence is suspended or expired cannot be included when calculating this period.
