Moreton Bay Rail Link will deliver a 12.6 km dual-track passenger rail line between Petrie and Kippa-Ring, including 6 new rail stations at Kallangur, Murrumba Downs, Mango Hill, Kinsellas Road, Rothwell and Kippa-Ring.
The $988 million project is jointly funded by the Australian Government ($583 million), Queensland Government ($300 million) and Moreton Bay Regional Council ($105 million).
The Lawnton to Petrie Upgrade project will be delivered with the Moreton Bay Rail Link as the Moreton Bay Rail project. The upgrade of the track and a new 1.5km quad track bridge between Lawnton and Petrie is required to integrate the new Moreton Bay Rail service. The Queensland Government funded the $168 million Lawnton to Petrie project.
The 12.6 km Shared User Path will be open to the public on Saturday 10 September.
The new shared user path runs adjacent to the rail line providing access to the stations from Petrie to Kippa-Ring, with connectivity to the region’s existing pathway network. The shared pathway provides a dedicated off-road facility for both pedestrians and cyclists.
The shared pathway has been designed with significant input from the Department of Transport and Main Roads, Emergency Services and Moreton Bay Regional Council.
The project opening date has been announced! A community open day will be held on Monday 3 October 2016.
Trains will be commence normal services the next day, Tuesday 4 October 2016.
Registrations for the community open day will open at 9am on Monday 12 September 2016. A free train shuttle service between Kippa-Ring and Petrie will be operating from 10am until 3pm.
Book early to ride a train on this new once-in-a-generation rail line. You will need a ticket to ride the train.
Testing and commissioning
The Moreton Bay Rail project moved into the testing and commissioning phase in early January 2016, with the high voltage overhead wires being electrified. The overhead wires carry 25,000 volts of electricity which is so powerful that coming close to them can cause electric shock or electrocution.
The community will notice trains operating along the rail line while testing is carried out on the signalling equipment and new infrastructure. During this period, up to 4 trains will be tested on the rail line both during the day and intermittently at night and on weekends. The rail line and stations will continue to remain closed to the public until the project opens.

Consultation outcomes for new rail and bus timetables
During November 2015 TransLink undertook 9 community consultation sessions on the draft bus and rail timetable for the opening of the Moreton Bay Rail Link across the project corridor. The opportunity to provide feedback on the proposed Moreton Bay region network has now closed. TransLink thanks the community for their participation. The outcomes of the consultation were released in January 2016.

The Moreton Bay Rail project is nearing completion as it progresses in the testing and commissioning phase. Stations are constructed and the finishing touches on landscaping, artwork and access roads are being carried out. Track and rail work has finished along the new 14km corridor from Lawton to Kippa-Ring.
The testing and commissioning phase has commenced and the first test train travelled the line on Tuesday 16 March 2016. Test trains will continue to check signalling systems on the new rail infrastructure. Drivers have commenced training on the new rail infrastructure to familiarise themselves prior to passenger services commencing.

More than 375,000 people call the Moreton Bay region home, making it the third largest local government area in Australia. It is also one of the fastest growing areas in the country with the population set to exceed 500,000 by 2031.
Transport in the Moreton Bay region is heavily geared towards cars. More than half the region’s population departs the area everyday to travel to work with the vast majority (83%) using a private vehicle for their journey.
The Moreton Bay Rail Link will significantly improve public transport in the area providing an incentive for people to switch from private vehicles to public transport. This will in turn free up capacity on the road network for journeys that can't be made using public transport.
The Moreton Bay Rail will:
- provide a more reliable, economical, and faster alternative to driving to Brisbane's Central Business District during peak periods
- help reduce congestion on the road network, including the Bruce Highway, and free up capacity for journeys that can’t be made using public transport
- provide sustainable and active transport options that reduce carbon emissions—every full train on the new line will take about 600 cars off the road
- provide better access to major employment centres both within and outside the Moreton Bay region
- help attract investment to the area and create business opportunities
- act as a catalyst for growth along the alignment, with stations becoming hubs of new development in the region.
The Moreton Bay Rail Link will provide a focal point for the local community, and will include a number of features, including:
- 14km of double track rail from Lawnton to Kippa-Ring
- grade separated rail connection to the Caboolture line
- 22 bridge structures to provide grade separation of road and rail, including over the Bruce Highway
- 6 new rail stations including bus interchanges and bike storage
- 2,850 carparks
- stabling (including train crew facilities) for 10 6-car trains in the vicinity of Kippa-Ring Station
- 3m wide concrete shared path for cyclists and pedestrians along the entire length of the corridor.
