- North Coast Region, Wide Bay Burnett Region
The department is upgrading the existing Boundary Road interchange on the Bruce Highway at Narangba.
The interchange upgrade will improve safety, ease congestion and increase capacity to cater for future traffic volumes.
The contract to construct the project was awarded to BMD Constructions in March 2016.
Major construction works started in May 2016 and the project is scheduled for completion by mid-2018, weather permitting.
Benefits of the upgrade include:
- a new 6-lane bridge over the highway to increase capacity and ease congestion
- longer on and off-ramps to improve safety for motorists entering and exiting the highway
- improved bridge clearance to avoid the need for high loads detouring on other roads
- a new shared user path increasing safety for pedestrians and cyclists
- the upgraded interchange will accommodate future 8-laning of the Bruce Highway.
The new bridge will be constructed north of the existing overpass, helping to reduce disruptions to Boundary Road traffic during construction.
It will include 4 through-lanes for Boundary Road traffic together with dedicated slip lanes feeding the northbound and southbound on-ramps.
The existing 2-lane Boundary Road bridge will be demolished and the overpass will be relocated to a position just north of the current location. Boundary Road will be realigned to tie-in with the new bridge location. The bridge and ramp design will cater for future 8-lane highway upgrading.
