Project info
Deception Bay Road is an urban arterial road connecting the Bruce Highway with Deception Bay. Sustained residential development in the Deception Bay region over the past five years has resulted in an increase in traffic using Deception Bay Road.
The planning and preliminary design for a future upgrade of Deception Bay Road from the Bruce Highway to Lipscombe Road is now complete.
The future road upgrade will provide a safer, free-flowing road environment for all road users including motorists, pedestrians and cyclists and will include:
- a median divided four-lane road with provision for six lanes in the future to accommodate future traffic growth
- upgrades to the intersections of Priests Road, Zammit Street, Krause Street, Warroo Drive, Tallagon Court and Lipscombe Road
- improved facilities for pedestrians, cyclists and public transport patrons.
The proposed upgrade has been designed to avoid impacting on Freshwater National Park. The park is home to significant flora and fauna including a population of koalas. Possible fauna protection measures between the Bruce Highway and Priests Road will be investigated further. Mature vegetation within the existing corridor will be preserved where possible.
The department is finalising the detailed design for a proposed new Deception Bay Road overpass bridge. The bridge design has been progressed independently of the upgrade to address safety and congestion issues at the existing bridge.
The new bridge design aims to meet projected traffic demands generated by increasing residential development in the area and improve safety for all road users, while also providing a safer, free-flowing road environment for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists in the area.
The bridge design will include:
- six 3.5m wide traffic lanes, including two through lanes and a turning lane in each direction, separated by a 3m median
- 4m wide footpath/cycleway
- 6.5m clearance, 1.1m higher to accommodate for high load vehicles on the Bruce Highway.
Benefits of the proposed future upgrade include:
- improved safety for all road users
- a reduction in traffic congestion and delays for residential and through traffic
- safer access to residential and commercial properties along the corridor
- improved facilities for pedestrians, cyclists and public transport patrons.
Construction timeframes will be determined in line with future reviews of QTRIP and the level of roads funding available.
