About the Project
A $47 million upgrade is currently underway on the Kennedy Developmental Road between Hughenden and Winton.
This project was fast tracked from 10 years to 5 years duration.
The upgrade is being delivered in two components:
The first stage of $24 million worth of restoration works is complete. These works were funded by the federal and state governments under the National Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements.
These restoration works were carried out on a 117 km stretch of road, extending south from Hughenden, and repaired damage caused by Cyclones Charlotte and Ellie in 2009. These works were completed in October 2011.
The second stage of the project, valued at $23 million will deliver a five-year program of road works that will rebuild (widen and seal) a 40 km section of the Kennedy Developmental Road between Elvira and Malakoff Downs.
During the 2011-2012 financial year, works will include placing an overlay on top of an already widened cross-section of road between Elvira and Malakoff Downs. These important works will enhance connectivity and driving conditions for regional road users.
Construction crews have been busy carrying out a variety of works including floodway upgrades, lime stabilisation and bitumen sealing on sections of the road network.
The department asks motorists to follow speed restrictions, drive to the condition of the road and check the traffic and travel information website for road conditions or phone 13 19 40 to receive up-to-date information about the road network.
