Mains Kessels intersection upgrade Project

Overview:

This project will provide a short underpass beneath Mains Road for Kessels Road traffic with improved turn and intersection lanes and new provisions for buses, pedestrians and cyclists.

This intersection is one of Queensland’s busiest with an average of over 90,000 vehicle movements per day. Separating Kessels Road traffic from Mains Road traffic will improve safety and travel times and provide a more efficient and reliable intersection with capacity to accommodate future traffic growth.

Location:

The intersection of Mains Road and Kessels Road in Macgregor, Brisbane.

Completion:

Early works including demolition of buildings, construction of retaining walls and noise barriers, and establishment of a site office and visitor experience centre are all scheduled for late 2011.

Plans for the main construction work are on track to start in early 2012 with project completion due by late 2014, weather permitting.

Benefits:
  • improved travel times and traffic flow by separating Kessels Road traffic from Mains Road
  • reduced delays and congestion
  • improved safety, reliability and fewer breakdowns
  • reduced vehicle operating costs
  • extended life of the intersection to cater for traffic growth
  • improved provision for cyclists (on-road and off-road)
  • improved amenity for the local community though enhanced urban design
  • reduced fuel consumption, local exhaust emissions and noise levels around the intersection
Supplier:

The Department of Transport and Main Roads (Queensland Government) is delivering the upgrade on behalf of the Australian Government.

Funding:

A$300 million (Australian Government funded – Nation Building Program)

Regions:
Metropolitan Region
