Reconstructing Mackay/Whitsunday

Overview:

The Department of Transport and Main Roads is working to reconstruct more than 300km of disaster-damaged roads in Mackay/Whitsunday region over the next few years, following cyclone and rain events of 2010 and 2011.

The work is part of Operation Queenslander, the largest reconstruction effort in Queensland’s history – rebuilding communities, fixing infrastructure and restoring regional economies.

Location:

The works are being delivered on a number of state-controlled highways and roads across the Mackay/Whitsunday region. The works have been packaged as follows:

  • North Package
  • Peak Downs Highway Package
  • West Package
  • Bruce Highway Package
  • RoadTek Mackay
  • RoadTek Townsville
  • Other roads
Completion:

Mid 2014

Benefits:
Queensland’s road network received more damage than any other state government asset during the flood and cyclone events of 2010/2011. Reconstruction works will make the Mackay/Whitsunday region’s roads safer, stronger and better able to cope with future weather events.

The program will generate more than 1050 local jobs.
Supplier:

RoadTek, local governments and private contractors will undertake these works on behalf of the department.

Funding:

The works are being delivered under Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRRA), a joint federal and state initiative. Under these arrangements, the Australian Government provides 75% of the funding, with 25% from the Queensland Government.

Regions:
Mackay Whitsunday Region
