Reconstructing South West

Overview:

The Department of Transport and Main Roads is working towards the reconstruction of over 1 third of the state-controlled road network in the South West Region which was damaged by flooding since January 2010.

The work is part of Operation Queenslander, the largest reconstruction effort in Queensland’s history, rebuilding communities, fixing infrastructure and restoring regional economies.

Location:

The works are being delivered on sections of state-controlled roads and highways in the South West Region, which includes the Maranoa, Paroo, Bulloo, Quilpie, Balonne and Murweh shires.

Completion:

The reconstruction works are expected to be delivered over the next couple of years, weather permitting.

Benefits:

Roads and highways will be restored to their previous condition to ensure the safety and efficiency of the state-controlled road network is maintained. Work will also provide opportunities for local and regional contractors and is expected to sustain over 1500 jobs over the life of the program.

Supplier:

RoadTek, local government, and private contractors will undertake these works on behalf of the department.

Funding:

The works are being delivered under Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRRA), a joint federal and state initiative. Under these arrangements the Australian Government provides 75% of the funding, with 25% from the Queensland Government.

Regions:
South West Region

Project info

Flooding events since January 2010 have impacted significantly on the state-controlled road network in the South West Region.

The federal and state governments will spend over $1 billion to restore sections of key routes in the South West tegion, including the:

  • Warrego Highway between Charleville and Jackson
  • Carnarvon Highway between Mungindi and Rolleston
  • Landsborough Highway between Morven and Tambo
  • Mitchell Highway between Barringun and Augathella
  • Castlereagh Highway between Hebel and St George.

Reconstruction work started on sections of a number of roads in 2010/11 including the Warrego Highway, Carnarvon Highway, Landsborough Highway, Mitchell Highway, Castlereagh Highway, Moonie Highway, Surat Developmental Road, Roma–Condamine Road, Wallumbilla South Road, Mitchell–St George Road, Bulloo Developmental Road, Quilpie–Thargomindah Road, Diamantina Developmental Road, Cooper Developmental Road and Quilpie–Adavale Road.

Works across the region will involve bitumen resurfacing, road stabilisation works, road formation repairs, drainage and culvert repairs, and pavement replacement.

The patience of road users is greatly appreciated as we respond to the massive task of rebuilding the transport network.

Program update—January 2013

View maps of future works on the South West Transport Network Reconstruction Program:

Warrego Highway main focus in 2013

It is the beginning of another big year for our Roma Office with numerous flood reconstruction projects scheduled to start within the next 12 months. As you can see on the Maranoa Region and Murweh Shire maps, 1 of our main focuses this year will be to repair the flood-damaged Warrego Highway to the west of Roma.

Ten contracts will commence on the highway between Roma and Mitchell this year alone, with 2 other major contracts soon to be awarded between Mitchell and Morven and Morven and Charleville.

Two contracts are set to start over the next month on the Roma to Mitchell section of the Warrego Highway. Works will involve pavement repairs and overlay works on a 4km section 6km west of Roma and a 2km section 20km east of Mitchell (across the railway line). As part of these works, repairs will be undertaken on Cattle Creek Crossing and a heavy vehicle breakdown pad will be constructed near the IOR fuel depot - these works have been funded by the Nation Building Program.

Please be careful when travelling through these work sites and allow some extra time for your journey for changed traffic conditions.

Highway to Hebel undergoes repair

Two contracts worth $27 million have been awarded to RoadTek Downs South West to repair the flood-damaged Castlereagh Highway between St George and Hebel.

More than 22km of floodway repairs and full road width reconstruction will be undertaken on the highway approximately 12km south of Dirranbandi.

Works are expected to commence by the end of January with floodway repairs due to be completed within 6 to 8 weeks, followed by full-width reconstruction over the course of 2013, weather permitting.

Works will take place between 6am and 6pm up to 7 days a week and traffic controllers, single lane closures and speed restrictions will be in place.

Motorists are asked to exercise caution while travelling through the work site and to allow an additional 10 minutes for possible delays.

Other flood repair works across the south-west

Weather permitting, final bitumen sealing works will occur from late January through to early February on the Warrego Highway between Yuleba and Wallumbilla. Final line marking between Jackson and Roma is expected to be finished by the end of February.

Reconstruction works are nearly complete on a 3.3km section of the Warrego Highway to the west of Morven and on a 2.7km section to the east of the town. Remaining works, including the replacement of 2 small culverts and repair works to other minor drainage structures, will be undertaken next month, weather permitting.

Excavation, widening and stabilisation works will start over the coming weeks on a 2.5km section of the Landsborough Highway south of the Augathella bridge near the BP.

Cement stabilisation works will be undertaken until March (weather permitting) on Diamantina Developmental Road between Quilpie and Windorah. Minor concrete works on drainage structures will also be completed during this time.
