Warrego Highway and Brisbane Valley Highway

Overview:

The Department of Transport and Main Roads has finalised the detailed design for the $94 million jointly funded program of works to upgrade the Warrego Highway and Brisbane Valley Highway intersection at Blacksoil.

Location:

Warrego Highway and Brisbane Valley Highway intersection.

Benefits:
  • Increased safety: The department is seeking to increase safety by grade-separating the intersection (making one highway pass over the other). This will remove the need for vehicles to turn across oncoming traffic. This will also improve the safety for pedestrians and cyclists as they will be able to cross via a dedicated shared path linking either side.
  • Increased capacity: The department is seeking to increase the capacity of the intersection to accommodate higher volumes of traffic caused by the region’s rapid population growth and the resources boom.
  • Decreased travel time: At the completion of the project the department is seeking to improve the travel time by adjusting the speed limit on the Warrego Highway to 100 km/h.
Regions:
Metropolitan Region

Project info

The Australian Government has announced it will commit $54 million to the upgrade from the Regional Infrastructure Fund, with the Queensland Government contributing the remaining $40 million to the project in recognition of the region’s rapid population growth.

The department has completed a detailed design for the intersection upgrade project. Construction is expected to commence in mid-2012 and be completed in mid-2014, weather and construction conditions permitting.

Project Background

The Warrego Highway and Brisbane Valley Highway intersection upgrade has undergone three phases of public consultation to date:

Phase 1 - July 2006: Community support for the project was identified and community members put forward ideas for inclusion in a preferred design.

Phase 2 - November 2006– January 2007: Community members were asked to comment on three proposed options developed by Department of Transport and Main Roads’ project team.

Phase 3 – December 2010–January 2011: Community members were asked to provide feedback on the proposed concept design.

The department held community feedback and information sessions with community groups, government agencies and special interest groups. These sessions helped to provide the community with the opportunity to share their comments about the concept design.

Key features

  • Brisbane Valley Highway/ Wulkuraka Connection Road will pass over the Warrego Highway, removing all at-level crossings with the Warrego Highway.
  • The interchange provides safe and efficient traffic movements for motorists.
  • A dedicated shared pathway will enable safer crossing of the Warrego Highway for pedestrians and cyclists.
  • Access to Blacksoil Village, local businesses and residential areas will be retained via the construction of a service road off Bayley Road.
  • Direct access to Eleazar Drive from the Warrego Highway will be restricted to address safety concerns.

The Department of Transport and Main Roads is committed to improving safety at the Warrego Highway and Brisbane Valley Highway intersection and will continue to keep the community informed about the progress of the project.
