Western Freeway upgrade: Indooroopilly to Toowong

The department is upgrading the Western Freeway between Indooroopilly and Toowong from 2 to 3 lanes in each direction.

See the Western Freeway Upgrade map for final plan and features.

From Moggill Road at Indooroopilly to the Mount Coot-tha roundabout at Toowong.

The upgrade will:

  • significantly improve the capacity of the road to meet the future needs of the traffic network in Brisbane's western suburbs.
  • improve safety and traffic flow and provide travel time savings on one of Brisbane's busiest roads.
  • help cater for traffic demand once Legacy Way opens in 2015.

Project info

The $55 million upgrade will be delivered by Transcity, the contractor delivering Brisbane City Council's Legacy Way tunnel and Moggill Road interchange upgrade.

All existing noise walls along the Western Freeway between Indooroopilly and Toowong, that are impacted as part of the works, will be upgraded to concrete barriers to match those upgraded as part of the Moggill Road and Western Freeway interchange upgrade.

During the upgrade, a cycle route along the Centenary Cycleway will be maintained.

The project is scheduled for completion in early 2015.

The standard work hours for the project are 6.30am to 6.30pm, Monday to Saturday, weather and construction conditions permitting.

The project team will endeavour to keep night work to a minimum and residents, businesses and motorists will be informed prior to night works commencing.
