Written-off vehicle definitions

There are 2 classifications of written-off vehicles – statutory and repairable write-offs.

Statutory write-offs

A statutory write-off is a vehicle that has been assessed as total loss because of 1 of the following:

• corrosion
• damage that satisfies the statutory write-off assessment criteria for the kind of vehicle.

In Queensland there are 2 statutory write-off assessment criteria.

• Motor vehicles with a gross vehicle mass (GVM) not more than 4.5t – the Damage Assessment Criteria for the Classification of Statutory Write-offs* (the National Criteria) as published by the National Motor Vehicle Theft Reduction Council.
• Motorbikes, caravans, trailers with an aggregate trailer mass (ATM) more than 4.5t and other vehicles – the Damage Assessment Criteria for the Classification of Statutory Write-offs—Motorbikes, Caravans, Heavy Trailers and Other Vehicles (PDF, 697 KB), as published by the department.

Repairable write-offs

A repairable write-off is a vehicle that has been assessed as a total loss but is not a statutory write-off.
