Is it safe to overtake an oversize vehicle?

An image of an oversize vehicle

Some oversize vehicles will have a pilot vehicle travelling behind them. All oversize vehicles will have a sign saying 'OVERSIZE' on them.

If you are travelling behind an oversize vehicle and want to overtake, do it safely by following these tips:

  • Be patient. Oversize vehicles should give you regular chances to overtake. (If you carry a citizens band or ultra-high-frequency radio, you may want to ask the driver of the oversize vehicle or pilot or escort vehicle when the road is clear so you can decide if it is safe to overtake).
  • Overtake only when the road ahead is clear.
  • Never overtake an oversize vehicle at an intersection.
  • Pass quickly and confidently, without exceeding the speed limit.
  • Be prepared for the wind to buffet your vehicle as you overtake.
  • Allow the oversize vehicle to stay on the sealed surface.
  • Allow enough room for the oversize vehicle and any pilot or escort vehicles when you pull back into the stream of traffic. Remember, oversize vehicles take longer to brake — take care not to cut them off after you overtake.
  • Be extra careful at night and on gravel surfaces.
