Roadwork signage

Roadwork signage is provided for the safety of roadworkers and road users. These signs can appear in different sequences, depending on the nature and type of road.

Common roadwork signs

Reduce speed

The Reduce Speed sign is typically the first sign you will see. It tells you to look out for roadworks and/or roadworkers, and to reduce your speed to the imposed limit as road and traffic conditions have changed.

Roadworker warning

The Reduce Speed sign with the Roadworker Warning sign tells you to expect roadworkers on or near the road, and to slow down to the imposed speed limit. The sign is found up to 500 metres before roadworkers at a roadwork site. The sign’s distance from roadworkers can differ between rural and urban roads. This is due to road length limits, speed limits and visibility restrictions caused by environmental or road conditions.

Traffic controller

The Traffic Controller sign is only used when traffic controllers are on the road. The sign usually follows the Roadwork Ahead or Roadworker Warning signs.

End roadwork

The End Roadwork sign is the last sign you will see when driving through roadworks. It marks the end point of the roadwork and tells you that the standard speed limit will apply beyond the sign.

Are you seeing the signs?

The department has produced a booklet to help you understand the signs you will most likely see at a roadwork site, the sequence they will most commonly be displayed in, and how you should respond.

You can download a copy of the Are you seeing the signs? booklet in PDF format below.

Printed copies of the booklet are available through QGAP offices, at Driver Reviver sites and in selected Department of Transport and Main Roads customer service centres.

We value your safety, so if you see something at a roadwork site you want to tell us about, we would like to hear from you. Visit the Contact us page, select "with an enquiry" and be sure to include the name of the road and location of the signage, as well as the issue and the time of day it was noticed. Once you send the information, we can determine if the works are on a state or local government road and take the necessary action.

You can also provide feedback by phoning RACQ Traffic and Safety on 1300 853 658.
