School environment safety
Queensland Guide to School Road Safety resource
The Queensland Guide to School Road Safety (PDF, 3.64 MB) is an online resource available to school communities, teachers and principals to improve road safety in their individual schools.
The Department of Transport and Main Roads encourages school communities to do everything they can to improve the safety of our children in the road environment. The guide provides members of the school community with a step-by-step guide and a toolkit of resources to develop and implement initiatives to make their school a safer place.
The guide is also available in sections, to make it easier to download:
School Zones guidelines
School Zones guidelines (PDF, 747 KB) have been developed for use by road authorities.
The guidelines outline the requirements for the provision of traffic control devices in the vicinity of schools, and provide detailed guidance on school road safety initiatives. Time of operation application forms are available below:
Where there are conflicting provisions in the guidelines and the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), the guidelines take precedence over the MUTCD.
The School Zone guidelines are issued under the authority of Section 166 of the Transport Operations (Road Use Management) Act 1995. The guidelines are considered as 'approved notices' under Section 166 (2) of the Act. The design of, and the methods, standards and procedures in relation to every sign, signal, marking, light or device, which is contained in the guidelines are considered as Official Traffic Signs under and within the meaning of the Act. These devices are erected by the Department of Transport and Main Roads and local governments for the purpose of regulating, warning or guiding traffic on the road system in this state.
