About cycling

Cycling in work clothesThe Department of Transport and Main Roads encourages active transport as part of an integrated land use and transport system for Queensland.

Active transport incorporates cycling, walking and other physically active ways of travelling that can be undertaken alone or combined with public transport.

The department's cycling program is undertaken across a number of divisions and regionally.

We provide information on cycling infrastructure and programs as well as user guides, resources and safety information.

Queensland Cycling Strategy 2017-2027

The Queensland Cycling Strategy 2017-2027 sets the strategic direction for cycling in Queensland over the next 10 years. We have identified 5 priorities:

  • Building and connecting infrastructure to grow participation.
  • Encouraging more people to ride.
  • Sharing our roads and public spaces.
  • Powering the economy.
  • Using research and data in decision making.

The strategy includes a 2 year action plan which focuses on the practical actions we need to do right now to encourage more people to cycle more often.

Every 2 years, the action plan will be updated and published alongside a new report on the state of cycling in Queensland.

Cycling Infrastructure Policy

The department has a Cycling Infrastructure Policy that applies to all state-controlled transport projects and corridors, including government funded infrastructure projects, upgrades and sponsored projects at all stages of the transport network infrastructure process. This incorporates:

  • corridor preservation
  • planning
  • design
  • construction
  • programmed maintenance/rehabilitation (where current or intended surfacing width is adequate)
  • operation
  • reporting.

The policy ensures that cycling is integrated into each stage of the infrastructure process to:

  • provide a complete cycling network
  • increase the safety of cyclists
  • ensure best value for money for the government
