Promoting walking

Two people walking with hats on.

Communities and businesses can benefit from increased numbers of pedestrians in the local area.

Individuals and/or community groups can encourage more pedestrian activity by:

  • organising regular walks with friends, family, neighbours and colleagues – become a walk organiser for the National Heart Foundation's walking program*
  • organising a neighbourhood walk to show neighbours what goods, services and recreational facilities are within walking distance
  • asking your local council for improved facilities including traffic calming, pedestrian crossings and wider footpaths
  • encouraging friends, family, neighbours and colleagues to walk short trips instead of driving
  • organising a walking pool with colleagues and picking up walkers along the way
  • helping organise a walking school bus at your child's school
  • approaching your local media for some positive publicity about the benefits of walking.

The benefits for businesses that encourage staff and clients to walk include:
  • the reduced need for car parks
  • an improved corporate image – seen to care about the community
  • improved access for clients due to decreased congestion around your site
  • increased productivity and improved health among physically active staff.
