Walking for fun

Where to walk

An image of a walker at South Bank parklands. There are many great recreational walking tracks throughout Queensland. Good walks often include enjoying scenery and nature such as gardens, beaches, bush trails and riverbanks. It's also a good idea to avoid as much traffic as possible and walk on footpaths.

The walking program developed by the National Heart Foundation and funded by the Queensland Government uses volunteer 'walk organisers' to establish small walking groups in local neighbourhoods. For information on how to contact your local walk organiser and how to become an organiser yourself, visit the Heart Foundation's walking website*.

There are books available outlining good tracks for bush walking or hiking. Browse through your local bookstore to see what is available in your local area or at your holiday destination.

Many walking tracks are closely linked to bike paths. For details on where to get maps of bike paths, visit the Department of Transport and Main Roads cycling website.

Walking in comfort

To get the most out of your walk, ensure you have:

  • comfortable and supportive walking shoes
  • comfortable clothes that will protect you from the sun
  • plenty of water
  • a hat and sunscreen.

If you are just starting to walk regularly, don't push yourself too hard. Walk at a pace that you feel comfortable with. Start with short walks and gradually walk further and further each day. The Heart Foundation's walking program has shown that people are more likely to walk regularly when they walk with a group, so walk with friends and make it a social occasion. Walking your dog to the local off-leash park is great exercise and provides the opportunity to meet and mix with other dog owners.
