Community Based Transport
Communities use private motor vehicles and public transport to provide mobility — improving the accessibility of goods and services for their members.
In every community, there are individuals for whom the private motor vehicle and mainstream public transport are not suitable or available.
The Department of Transport and Main Roads, in conjunction with the Local Government Association of Queensland, has jointly developed two documents to address transport disadvantages confronting communities.

The
Community Based Transport Guidelines (PDF, 476 KB) are specifically designed to assist local governments in assessing community transport needs. The guidelines explore which solutions other governments have produced while managing issues in communities across Australia.
The
Community Based Transport Toolbox (PDF, 1.09 MB) provides local governments with a practical, hands-on reference point to assess which transport options are available. The toolbox is also designed for individual workers, groups and local councils to use when planning and implementing transport solutions in their own communities. The toolbox has been split into four sections, and some of the content contained in the toolbox has been updated to include links to grants and other funding opportunities. The toolbox and updated content are intended to be viewed together and can be found below:
The guidelines and toolbox work together as companion documents. Both are valuable in the decision making process when developing transport initiatives.
The guidelines and toolbox can help organisations wanting to apply for funding through the Rural Service Access Initiative in the Blueprint for the Bush funding available through the Department of Local Government. Further information on the Blueprint for the Bush is available on the Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation website.
The Department of Transport and Main Roads currently supports three community transport services in the North and Central Burnett region:
- In September 2005, the department contracted Jena Boran Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Corporation to provide a community bus service from Mundubbera to Bundaberg that ran fortnightly on Thursdays. In April 2006, this service increased in frequency to weekly.
Bookings can be made by contacting Jena Boran Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Corporation on +61 7 4165 4236a.
- The Eidsvold to Bundaberg contracted community bus service commenced in late May 2006 and is operated by North Burnett Regional Council with Wakka Wakka Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Corporation providing a driver for this service. The service operates on a bookings basis on Thursdays, providing smaller communities in the region such as Mt Perry and Gin Gin with a vital link to Bundaberg.
