Long distance coaches

An image of a Greyhound bus

The Department of Transport and Main Roads (then Queensland Transport) initiated a scheme in 2002 to financially support long distance coach services in rural and remote Queensland. These scheduled coach operations give people living in rural and remote communities access to essential services, such medical, educational, social, and dental, at larger population centres.

In 2006, the department reviewed its long distance passenger service network with the Queensland Government endorsing the submission to continue supporting long distance coach services for the next generation of five year contracts.

The department made significant changes to the next generation of long distance coach contracts to improve contract performance management, service delivery, operator efficiency and service integrity.

Benefits to passengers vary from route to route but would include:

  • new modern coaches that are wheelchair accessible
  • online ticketing
  • improved reliability of services
  • better connections with air, rail and other coach services
  • improved marketing, to ensure regional communities are aware of the services available
  • qconnect branding.

New contracts were awarded to operators from 1 January 2008 and will remain current until 31 December 2012.

These services provide access to rural and remote Queensland communities including:
