Full time Queensland tertiary students
Q: I have a Tertiary Transport Card. Am I entitled to any concessions on urban public transport when I visit Brisbane and the Gold Coast (south east Queensland)?
A: Yes. Your Tertiary Transport Card entitles you to concessions on urban public transport throughout Queensland.
Q: I am a full-time student on Youth Allowance studying for a degree, but I am enrolled at two different universities. Each university only recognises me as a part time student and will not imprint the QR identifier on my student identification card. I am currently attending university lectures and tutorials for 14 hours a week. Am I eligible for any concessions on urban public transport?
A: Yes. You need to apply for a Tertiary Transport Card. To be eligible for a Tertiary Transport Card, you must be enrolled in a course approved by Centrelink for Austudy, Abstudy, or Youth Allowance purposes at a Queensland educational institution (or institutions) and must attend that institution (or institutions) for a minimum of 12 hours per week. The course must run for a minimum of 12 weeks. You can obtain the Tertiary Transport Card application form from the transport concessions for tertiary students web page.
Q: I am a full time external student. Am I entitled to any concessions on urban public transport?
A: No. To be eligible for concessions on urban public transport, you must attend an educational institution in Queensland for a minimum of 12 hours per week for the duration of the course.
Q: I am a full time student enrolled at an educational institution in another Australian state (or territory). Am I entitled to any concessions on urban public transport while in Queensland?
A: No. To be eligible for a student concession, you must study full time at an educational institution located in Queensland in a course approved by Centrelink for Austudy, Abstudy or Youth Allowance purposes.
Q: I am an international student studying for a bachelor degree full time at a south east Queensland university. Am I entitled to any concessions on urban public transport?
A: Yes. If you are studying full time at a Queensland educational institution in a course approved by Centrelink for Austudy, Abstudy or Youth Allowance purposes, you are entitled to concessions on urban public transport. If you are studying at a campus within south east Queensland, you need to contact your educational institution to have the QR identifier imprinted on your student identification card. If you are studying full time at a campus outside of south east Queensland, you will have to apply for the Queensland Transport Tertiary Transport Card.
Q: I am an international student enrolled at an overseas university. I am currently doing some research at a university in Queensland. Am I entitled to any concessions on urban public transport?
A: No. You must be enrolled in an educational institution located in Queensland to be eligible for concessions on urban public transport.
Totally and Permanently Incapacitated (TPI) Veteran Travel Pass holders
Q: What is the Queensland Government TPI Veteran Travel Pass?
A: The TPI Veteran Travel Pass is a photographic plastic credit-card size pass that will entitle the holder to unlimited free travel on approved public transport throughout Queensland. It is available to Queensland residents who hold a Commonwealth Department of Veterans' Affairs Repatriation Health Card – for All Conditions (Gold) that is embossed Totally and Permanently Incapacitated (DVA TPI Gold Card).
The Queensland Government TPI Veteran Travel Pass will replace the current permits and paper vouchers.
Q: What is approved public transport?
A: TPI Veteran Travel Pass holders will receive unlimited free travel on the following approved public transport services from 17 January 2011:
- TransLink bus services
- TransLink ferry services (CityCat and Brisbane Ferries)
- TransLink rail services (Queensland Rail’s City network)
- qconnect urban bus services (Airlie Beach and Proserpine, Bowen, Bundaberg, Cairns, Gladstone, Gympie, Hervey Bay, Innisfail, Mackay, Magnetic Island, Maleny to Beerwah, Maryborough, North Stradbroke Island, Rockhampton, Toowoomba, Townsville, Warwick and Woodford to Caboolture)
- approved ferry services outside the TransLink network:
- Palm Island to Townsville
- Magnetic Island to Townsville
- Seisia to Thursday Island
- Coochiemudlo Island to Victoria Point
- North Stradbroke Island
- Southern Moreton Bay Islands (Russell Island, Macleay Island, Karrgarra Island, Lamb Island to Redland Bay).
TPI veterans will maintain their current entitlement of one free return trip each fortnight on Traveltrain long distance rail services. You will still need to make a booking by contacting Queensland Rail Traveltrain on 1800 872 467 or visiting www.queenslandrail.com.au*
Q: What classes of travel am I entitled to when using my TPI Veteran Travel Pass to book a seat on Traveltrain long distance rail services? Are there any conditions of travel I should be aware of?

If a TPI veteran occupies a Business Class or Economy Class seat, your travel is free.
If a TPI veteran occupies a First Class or Economy Class sleeping berth, you are required to pay the applicable sleeping berth fee.
If a TPI veteran wants to travel in Queenslander Class, you must pay the difference between the First Class fare and the relevant Queenslander Class fare. All meals are included in Queenslander Class.

Q: What is not approved public transport?
A: The TPI Veteran Travel Pass cannot be used on the following services:
- Brisbane Airtrain (international and domestic stations)
- Tourist Train services (for example Kuranda Scenic Railway and the Gulflander)
- Queensland Rail Trainlink services (for example Hervey Bay,Yeppoon and Airlie Beach)
- any ferry services not listed above
- any taxi services.
Q: Who is eligible for a TPI Veteran Travel Pass?
A: Applicants must hold a DVA TPI Gold Card with a DVA file number beginning with the letter ‘Q’ to signify Queensland residency.
The TPI Veteran Travel Pass can only be used in Queensland and is not transferable.
Q: Can I get travel concessions for my dependants using the TPI Veteran Travel Pass?
A: No. Dependants travelling with the card holder must pay the appropriate fare.
Q: Can I get travel for my spouse or partner with my TPI Veteran Travel Pass?
A: Yes. Spouses or partners of TPI veterans who do not receive a pension of their own may be issued with four (4) TPI spouse free Traveltrain rail entitlements each calendar year.
Q: How do I apply for a TPI Veteran Travel Pass?
A: Please complete the Totally and Permanently Incapacitated (TPI) Veteran Travel Pass Information and Application Form, attach two colour passport sized photographs and a photocopy of your DVA TPI Gold Card.

Q: When will I receive my TPI Veteran Travel Pass?
A: You can expect to receive your TPI Veteran Travel Pass within 20 working days following receipt of your application.
Q: What will happen if I do not receive my TPI Veteran Travel Pass by 17 January 2011?
A: The TPI Veteran Travel Pass will be effective for use from 17 January 2011.
If you have not received your TPI Veteran Travel Pass from this date, you are still able to redeem your current permits and paper vouchers on Queensland Rail's City network services and Traveltrain long distance rail services until 31 March 2011.
Q: How do I use my TPI Veteran Travel Pass?
A: The TPI Veteran Travel Pass must be presented when using approved public transport services or upon request by an authorised person or driver. Your TPI Veteran Travel Pass must be carried at all times when using approved public transport services.
From 17 January 2011, the TPI Veteran Travel Pass is all you need to book your Traveltrain long distance rail entitlement.
Q: What if I have a go card?
A: Once you have received your TPI Veteran Travel Pass, you no longer need to use a go card on approved public transport. If you have remaining credit on your go card you may contact TransLink on 13 12 30 to arrange a refund.
Q: When does the TPI Veteran Travel Pass expire?
A: The TPI Veteran Travel Pass is valid for five years and the expiry date is printed on your card.
Q: What happens if I lose my pass?
A: If your TPI Veteran Travel Pass is lost, stolen or damaged, you can request a replacement card by phoning ABnote on 3861 8013. Written confirmation of the cardholder’s full name, date of birth, postal address and DVA file number will be required (no additional photo is required).
