Managing student behaviour on school buses package
Managing student behaviour on school buses package
The Code of Conduct for School Students Travelling on Buses is a set of behavioural guidelines for students to follow when travelling on buses.
The department, in partnership with Education Queensland, has developed a range of resources that will assist bus operators, drivers and schools with the implementation of the code and the management of student behaviour on buses.
Safe Travel of School Students Guiding Principles
The Safe Travel of School Students Guiding Principles (PDF, 758 KB) is an initiative developed by the Bus Safety Committee. The Committee is chaired by the Assistant Minister for Public Transport and has representation from key Government agencies, industry, unions, a bus operator, bus driver representative and P&Cs Queensland.
The document supports the Code of Conduct by outlining the role of key stakeholders in the safe travel of school students. The document encourages stakeholders to work in collaboration to ensure students are educated on the Code of Conduct and display appropriate bus behaviour.
The Guiding Principles recommend that schools and bus operators work together to identify any issues as they arise and promptly find ways to address these issues.
Parents/carers should discuss the Code of Conduct with their school-aged children to ensure they know the appropriate behaviours for bus travel. If there are behavioural concerns, parents/carers need to work with the school and bus operator to ensure the student displays appropriate behaviour in the future.
Information sheets have also been developed to assist principals, teachers and parents/carers to reinforce the responsibilities of school students, clearly articulating expected and unacceptable behaviour.
The information sheet for principals and teachers (PDF, 120 KB) provides key messages that can be used at school assemblies or during class.
The information sheet for parents/carers (PDF, 238 KB) reminds parents/careers and students of appropriate behaviour for bus travel and consequences for misbehaviour, as outlined in the Code of Conduct.
Bus operator and school training resources
The Code of Conduct for School Students Travelling on Buses and Managing Student Behaviour on Buses DVD/CD package is a training and information package that demonstrates processes and techniques available to implement the code and manage student behaviour on buses.
The DVD/CD package demonstrates how co-operation between schools and bus operators is essential to the management of student behaviour. The DVD shows a number of behaviour incidents that can occur on a bus. It also illustrates the process that bus drivers and operators should follow to manage these inappropriate behaviour incidents. The CD contains written support material which outlines suggestions for facilitating a workshop about the Code of Conduct for School Students Travelling on Buses and the Managing Student Behaviour on Buses training package.
The Really Cool Bus Rules Program DVD/CD package is an educational resource for bus operators and primary teachers targeted at grade levels of two, four and six to promote safe travel behaviour in and around a bus.
The program is a school based lesson of 45–50 minutes which takes place:
- outside a bus (parked in the school's bus bay)
- in the bus (with the class teacher seated in the driver's seat)
- in a classroom for viewing a DVD and reviewing points raised in the lesson, with a focus on:
- issues of safe behaviour—waiting for a bus and being on a bus
- crossing the road safely—emphasising the need to stop, look, listen, and think before walking across the road
- the importance of traffic controllers, for example, school crossing supervisors, traffic lights, zebra crossings.
Included in the DVD is the Cool School Bus Rules song, an animated film with a song that highlights the safe travel behaviour points.
