Long distance coaches
The Department of Transport and Main Roads (then Queensland Transport) initiated a scheme in 2002 to financially support long distance coach services in regional Queensland.
These long distance coaches give regional, rural and remote communities access to essential services.
Current contracts were awarded to operators from 1 January 2008, and have been extended until 31 December 2014 (taking into consideration the review of long distance passenger transport services).
Review of long distance passenger services
In February 2013, the department announced a review to improve the network of government-contracted long distance passenger transport services in regional, rural and remote Queensland.
The review will evaluate the existing arrangement for government-contracted long distance air, coach and rail services to ensure that communities receive the best value for money.
