TravelSmart

The TravelSmart program was implemented in 2008 to address traffic congestion in South East Queensland. The program encouraged people to drive less in favour of more sustainable transport options including walking, cycling, carpooling and public transport.

The program was funded through the Queensland State Government Congestion Management Strategy to deliver projects from 2008 – 2012 across 3 projects areas:

  • Communities
  • Workplaces
  • Schools.

Communities

The TravelSmart Communities project engaged 324,000 households in the Brisbane South, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast and Caboolture regions. This project provided information on sustainable modes of transport encouraging people to change the way they travel.

Workplaces

The Travelsmart Workplaces project engaged 10 workplaces across Government Agencies, Local Councils and private organisations, providing templates, resources and information to assist in planning and implementing the project. Workplaces developed travel plans to increase sustainable transport use as an organisation, helping to reduce traffic congestion in Queensland.

Schools

The TravelSmart Schools project gave information about sustainable transport options to schools to reduce the number of vehicles making the trip to and from school. The project was delivered to 97 schools across Queensland in 2012 in the following regions:

  • Gold Coast
  • Logan
  • Redlands
  • Ipswich
  • Toowoomba
  • Goondiwindi
  • Sunshine Coast
  • Cairns
  • Townsville
  • Mackay
  • Rockhampton

As part of the TravelSmart program, a series of local travel maps were created for 6 local council areas:

  • Brisbane
  • Gold Coast
  • Logan
  • Ipswich
  • Moreton Bay
  • Sunshine Coast.

The travel maps provide information on walking, cycling and public transport across South East Queensland.  For further information on local travel maps or to obtain a hard copy, please contact the relevant local council.
