Applying for a dangerous goods driver licence
You need a dangerous goods driver licence and vehicle licence when transporting dangerous goods in a receptacle with a capacity of more than 500L or more than 500kg of dangerous goods in a receptacle.
However, a dangerous goods driver licence is not required when the dangerous goods being transported:
- are in an intermediate bulk container
and - the intermediate bulk container is not packed or unpacked on the vehicle
and - the total capacity of intermediate bulk containers containing dangerous goods on the vehicle is not more than 3,000L.
An intermediate bulk container is a rigid or flexible portable package for transporting dangerous goods that has been tested against the requirements of the Australian Dangerous Goods Code and is designed for mechanical handling.
To be eligible for a dangerous goods driver licence, you must:
- be a Queensland resident
- hold a current Queensland open driver licence (or current Queensland probationary or restricted licence where you previously have held an open driver licence)
- have a medical certificate for motor vehicle drivers issued no later than 6 months before you apply
- have completed an approved dangerous goods driver training course no later than 6 months before you apply
- have an acceptable criminal history and traffic history.

I want to apply for a new dangerous goods licence
You will be required to:
- answer questions to verify your identity before lodging the application
- upload relevant documentation to support your application (such as course certificate and medical certificate)
- pay the dangerous goods driver licence fee by credit card.
You will not be able to lodge an application online if you:
- already hold a dangerous goods driver licence accreditation
- already have a dangerous goods driver licence application in the system waiting to be processed or finalised
- do not hold a current Queensland driver licence (open, probationary or restricted driver licence)
- are not an individual (organisations are not eligible to apply for a dangerous goods driver licence).
If your dangerous goods licence is approved and you are signed up for e-reminders we will email you:
- an interim industry authority as evidence that you are authorised to perform the role until your industry authority card arrives in the mail
- when your industry card arrives in the mail
- 3 days before your industry authority is due to be renewed.
Apply in person for a dangerous goods driver licence
To apply for a dangerous goods driver licence in person, visit a transport and motoring customer service centre and bring:
- your current Queensland driver licence
- evidence of your identity
- your medical certificate (completed and signed by your doctor)
- your dangerous goods driver licence course certificate
- your completed dangerous goods driver licence application form (F4486)
- the licensing fee. The licensing fee will not be refunded if your application is unsuccessful.
Medical certificates
Your medical certificate for motor vehicle driver form (F3712) must be completed and assessed under commercial standards by a qualified medical practitioner.
Complete part 1 before you visit your medical practitioner.
When making your appointment, you should tell your doctor why you are making the appointment. This type of appointment may take longer than a standard consultation.
Criminal history
We may refuse to grant a dangerous goods licence to you if you have been convicted of a criminal offence or you are currently charged with a criminal offence and the charge has not been finally disposed of.
We may take into account any charges or offences committed in any jurisdiction when deciding whether to issue the dangerous goods driver licence.
Traffic history
We will check your traffic history when you apply—you must have a suitable traffic history to be approved as a dangerous goods driver.
Examples of when a dangerous goods driver licence may be refused include:
- where the applicant’s driver licence has been suspended more than once in the last 3 years due to an accumulation of demerit points
- where the applicant’s driver licence has been cancelled or disqualified more than once in the last 5 years (for a new dangerous goods driver licence application) or in the last 3 years (for renewal of a dangerous goods driver licence).
Interstate dangerous goods driver licence holders
If you hold a current interstate dangerous goods driver licence, you can drive a dangerous goods vehicle anywhere in Queensland.
There is no requirement to change your dangerous goods driver licence if you become a resident of Queensland. You can use your interstate licence until it expires.
You must apply for a Queensland dangerous goods licence at least 6 weeks before your interstate dangerous goods driver licence expires.
