Becoming an approved traffic management training provider

The Department of Transport and Main Roads invites Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) interested in providing training in traffic management to apply to become an approved training provider.

The department licenses RTOs to train and assess Traffic Management Implementation (RIIWHS302E) and Traffic Control (RIIWHS205E) training packages on the department's behalf.

The safety of all road users is important to the department and the department works closely with its approved providers to ensure training is of the highest standard.

RTO governance framework and risk methodology

The RTO Governance Framework and Risk Methodology ensures legislative requirements and quality of training programs are maintained through governance and management of RTO providers.

Applicant obligations

Entering into a licence agreement with the department places obligations on a training provider.

  • Trainers must meet mandatory requirements set by the department.
  • RTOs must submit monthly reports to the department.
  • Licensees and their third parties must allow the department to conduct audits of the approved program as required.

Special requirements

A unique component of Queensland's traffic control training program is the requirement for entrants new to the industry to complete 20 hours of practical experience.

Licensees must have a signed agreement with a placement company to ensure all traffic control training participants have access to a suitable roadwork site. Please refer to Section 4.7 of the Traffic Controller Accreditation Scheme Approved Procedure.
