Gold Coast Waterways Authority

Image of the Gold Coast Waterways Authority areaA Gold Coast Waterways Authority (GCWA) is being established to manage the sustainable use and development of the Gold Coast waterways. This includes:

  • delivering dredging and marine infrastructure projects to improve access to Gold Coast waterways
  • managing on-water activities occurring on Gold Coast waterways, including marine tourism activities, buoy moorings, anchoring, amenity and congestion issues
  • maintaining key coastal engineering assets, including the Gold Coast Seaway, Wavebreak Island and the sand bypassing system.

Gold Coast waterways are at the heart of the region's recreation and tourism industry as a playground for locals and tourists who come to experience the Queensland lifestyle. The Gold Coast’s world class marine precinct is a significant contributor to the region’s economy and these waterways are home to key fish habitats and part of the Moreton Bay Marine Park. The range of activities and interests of this region means that any future management of Gold Coast waterways needs to be representative of locals, boaties, fishers and tourists in a sustainable and environmentally sensitive manner.

The GCWA will manage the waterways south of the Logan River to the New South Wales border. View a chartlet of the GCWA’s area of responsibility.

Gold Coast Waterways Board

A board made up of local community and industry representatives will be responsible for overseeing the better management of Gold Coast waterways with a particular focus on improving navigational access, availability of boating infrastructure as well as promoting local tourism and recreation. The GCWA Board has a key role to engage the broader Gold Coast community and industry in identifying local issues and needs to underpin the GCWA’s work. The GCWA Board will report directly to the Transport and Main Roads Minister and advise on matters associated with the Gold Coast waterways

Nominations were called for a place on the GCWA Board. The nomination period is now closed. For more information about the call for nominations, email gcwaboard@tmr.qld.gov.au.
