Goodna Bypass

Location

The Goodna Bypass connects the Ipswich Motorway at Gailes to the Cunningham Highway at Dinmore and passes the through the suburbs of Riverview, Redbank Peninsula, Moggill and Wacol.

History

The Goodna Bypass corridor was conceived as a deviation and alternative option to the upgrading of the Ipswich Motorway between Dinmore and Gailes. The Ipswich Motorway is part of the national highway network, which is funded by the Federal Government but administered by the State Government.

In 2007, the Federal Government took the decision to upgrade the existing motorway (currently underway) and ceased planning for this deviation. Prior to this decision, a considerable amount of planning had been undertaken to identify a suitable corridor. Some properties affected by the proposed corridor have previously been purchased by the department.

In July 2008, the then Minister for Main Roads and Local Government, the Honourable Warren Pitt MP, announced that the federal and state governments had decided to preserve the corridor and retain properties acquired to date. He stated that:

“A decision had been made to preserve the transport corridor that had been identified for the Goodna Bypass and to retain properties acquired to date.

“This approach, which is supported by the Federal Government, looks to the long-term future and is a sensible land use decision to cater for the region’s continuing growth.

“It does not mean, however, that the bypass project as proposed by the former federal coalition government will proceed at some future date.

“The Goodna Bypass proposal – as the alternative to upgrading the existing motorway – has been scrapped, and the proof of that is we are proceeding full steam with the Goodna to Dinmore project.” 

Current status

Whilst Transport and Main Roads is protecting the corridor for the future, there are no current proposals for construction within the corridor.

The State Government owns some of the properties that could be affected by the corridor. The properties were purchased following requests from property owners.
