High speed licence suspension

High speed licence suspensions apply if you commit an offence by driving more than 40km/h over the speed limit.

If you're convicted

If you're caught driving more than 40km/h over the speed limit, you will be given a ticket for the offence.

You'll be convicted of the offence when you:

• pay the fine
• are dealt with by a court
• the ticket has been referred to the State Penalties Enforcement Registry (SPER).

If convicted, you'll be sent a 'Notice of Driver Licence Suspension for Speeding Offence'. From the date stated in this notice your:

• Queensland licence is suspended for 6 months
• authority to drive in Queensland on your non-Queensland driver licence is suspended for 6 months.

Demerit points

The offence of driving more than 40km/h over the speed limit attracts 8 demerit points. These points will be recorded on your traffic history. If you accumulate too many demerit points, you'll also be dealt with under the demerit points scheme.

We'll also apply double demerit points to any second or further offences for speeding more than 20km/h over the speed limit within 1 year of the previous offence.
