Mackay Ring Road

Overview:

The Mackay Ring Road will reduce heavy vehicle traffic through Mackay, and provide an improved link from the south to the northern suburbs.

The project will be completed in 2 stages:

  • Stage 1—Stockroute Road roundabout to Bald Hill Road (under construction)
  • Stage 2—Mackay Port Access Road, Bruce Highway north of Mackay to Harbour Road and the Mackay Port (in planning). For more information on future planned projects read the Mackay Isaac Whitsunday Regional Transport Plan.
Mackay Ring Road naming call to action

Infrastructure naming submissions are now open!

We are calling on the community for nominations for the naming of the Mackay Ring Road's largest bridge – the new Pioneer River crossing.

Map of Mackay Ring Road bridge structures

The Mackay Ring Road is made up of 13 structures, including 4 water crossings and 9 overpass structures. We may also consider names for other pieces of infrastructure along the road based on the submissions received.

The name should highlight Mackay's culture and history – be it a person, place, event, flora or fauna. Before making a submission, please ensure you have read the submission details and selection criteria information on the Mackay Ring Road Infrastructure Naming page.

If you have previously contacted us with a naming recommendation, you will need to submit your naming suggestion via the formal process for it to be considered.

Submissions close 5pm Wednesday 29 July 2020 .

Project information

Mackay has historically experienced strong population growth contributing to significant congestion and safety issues on the road network. By 2031, it is anticipated that the forecast population will result in the existing network exceeding capacity.

In 2011, the Australian Government funded a $10 million planning study under the Regional Infrastructure Fund, to identify a ring road alignment that would:

  • improve road safety and freight efficiency in the Mackay area, and
  • improve connectivity between industrial areas and the Mackay Port and residential areas and employment precincts

Project timeline

  • 2011–13—planning
  • 2014–17—detailed design Stage 1
  • 2017–20—construction
