Alice River Bridge reconstruction works (Hervey Range Road)

Overview:

Reconstruction works to the Alice River Bridge on Hervey Range Road, west of Townsville, are now complete following severe damage sustained during the North and Far North Queensland Monsoon Trough event in January and February 2019.

Location:

Alice River on Hervey Range Road, about 30 km west of Townsville.

Completion:

The bridge was reopened to traffic on 26 June 2019. All works were completed in early July 2019, weather and site conditions permitting.

Benefits:

Reconstruction of the Alice River Bridge has restored access to this section of Hervey Range Road, a vital link for motorists travelling west from Townsville via Hervey Range. It has also restored access for transport operators who transport goods and materials from Townsville west via the Gregory Developmental Road and onto the communities of Georgetown and the Gulf of Carpentaria.

Supplier:

RoadTek is carrying out the works on behalf of the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR).

Funding:

Eligible reconstruction works will be jointly funded by the Commonwealth and Queensland Governments under the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA).

Project info

Following the North and Far North Queensland Monsoon Trough event in January and February 2019, a significant amount of debris was required to be removed once the water receded.

Specialist engineering assessments were undertaken in February and March 2019 to determine the extent of damage to the bridge and develop a plan for reconstruction works.

Reconstruction works on the bridge commenced in early April 2019.

The first stage involved earthworks to backfill around the bridge piers, due to erosion caused by floodwaters.

The western end of the bridge was completely unsupported due to erosion, which meant damaged concrete had to be cut away and the embankment and road approach reinstated.

Rock protection has also been placed in the riverbed to protect future erosion.

On 26 June 2019, the bridge was reopened to traffic. All works were completed in early July 2019.
