Mount Lindesay Arterial Road (Beaudesert Road) and Illaweena Street, upgrade intersection (known as the Beaudesert Road and Illaweena Street intersection upgrade)

The design has been completed for the Beaudesert Road and Illaweena Street intersection upgrade project in Calamvale. Construction started late June 2022

This intersection regularly experiences high traffic volumes, with around 35,000 vehicles travelling on Beaudesert Road per day and around 10,000 vehicles travelling on Illaweena Street and Algester Road daily in 2020.

Upgrading this intersection will help to manage congestion along Beaudesert Road and improve safety for all road users.

Benefits

  • Reduces travel time
  • Improves network efficiency
  • Improves safety
  • Reduces peak hour congestion
  • Contributes to economy
  • Increases capacity
  • Increases traffic flow
  • Better active transport

Key features

  • Widening Beaudesert Road to 6 through lanes (3 in each direction)
  • Extending the right-turn lanes into Algester Road and Illaweena Street.
  • Replacing the left-turn slip lanes into Algester Road and Illaweena Street with signalised left-turn lanes.
  • Upgrading bus stops before and after the intersection.
  • Constructing a shared pedestrian and bicycle riding path adjacent to the Beaudesert Road northbound lanes by using the existing service road.
  • Constructing a protected intersection with separated bicycle riding lanes and other safety features to protect all road users.

Protected intersection

A highlight of the design is a protected intersection, which includes innovative design features to separate bicycle riders from general traffic and pedestrians so all roads users can safely share the intersection.

While there are other intersections in Brisbane that have protective features for bicycle riders, this upgrade will deliver a protected intersection, providing a safer and more predictable environment for all road users and encouraging more people to get on a bike and keep active.

An example of a protected intersection was recently completed at Albert and Lansdowne streets in Melbourne—watch a video about this intersection.
