Project info

Stapylton—Jacobs Well Road is a 2 lane, undivided rural road, linking the rural communities of Jacobs Well, Cabbage Tree Point and the Horizon Shores Marina through to the Pacific Highway.

The road carries a substantial number of heavy vehicles, generated by the cane farming and quarry industries, together with local and tourist vehicles generated by the township of Jacobs Well.

Stapylton-Jacobs Well Road crosses over Behm Creek in Woongoolba.

Bridge inspections carried out identified the following bridge deficiencies:

  • The structure is in poor condition, with extensive cracking exposing the steel reinforcement. The corrosion has caused significant spalling of the concrete.
  • Guardrails do not conform to current design codes.
  • Acid sulphate soils have badly corroded the structure.
  • The business case progressed the approved preferred option to replace the existing bridge on the existing alignment with a low vertical profile.

The upgrade of the Behm Creek Bridge includes:

  • The existing bridge will be replaced on the existing road alignment and on a low vertical profile.
  • The new bridge is a 25m single span deck unit structure (with concrete deck slab). The new deck level will be approximately 1.1m above the existing deck level. The bridge will be supported on new reinforced concrete abutments with piled foundation which will be protected by a sheet pill wall clad in concrete.
  • The existing central bridge pier and abutments will be removed along with the existing bridge deck superstructure.
  • The vertical profile of the bridge deck will change to accommodate as increase in the clearance of the watercourse below.
