Benaraby to Calliope River safety works and north of Benaraby overtaking lane extension

Overview:

This $46 million package of works, jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland Governments, is being delivered as one single construction contract consisting of 2 distinct projects.

The 2 projects are:

  • Benaraby to Calliope River safety works
  • North of Benaraby overtaking lane extension.
Location:

10E Bruce Highway (Benaraby to Rockhampton).

Completion:

Mid-2020.

Benefits:

The safety works will deliver critical safety benefits to motorists, improve efficiency and ensure the highway can cater for future traffic growth. The Benaraby township will also benefit from the installation of a township entry treatment, encouraging drivers to be mindful of the change in road environment and speed reduction.

Funding:

$46 million funded by the Australian and Queensland Governments.

  • Benaraby to Calliope River safety works - $42.5M ($34M Australian Government, $8.5M Queensland Government).
  • Benaraby overtaking lane extension - $3.6M (Australian Government).

Benaraby to Calliope River Safety Works

The proposed scope of works includes 9 kilometres of road widening at various sections to provide wide centre line treatment (WCLT) and safer roadside treatments (barriers).

Project activities include:

  • Wide Centre Line Treatment (WCLT)
  • Safer Roadside Treatments
  • Town Entry Treatment (Benaraby Township)
  • Safety Widening.

North of Benaraby overtaking lane extension

Construction of a southbound overtaking lane extension

The overtaking lane construction tender was awarded in March 2019, with works commencing in May 2019.

An average of 73 direct jobs will be supported over the life of the project.

The Bruce Highway Upgrade Program (BHUP) is jointly funded by the Australian Department of Infrastructure, Regional Development and Cities (DIRDC), and the Queensland Government, through The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR). The BHUP is a $12.6 billion 15 year program of works (2013-14 to 2027-28) to improve safety, flood resilience and capacity along the Bruce Highway.
