Project info

The Bruce Highway Safety Package (The Leap to Careys Creek) will improve safety by widening the highway to install wide centre lines, to reduce the incidents of head-on crashes, installation of safety barriers, upgrading 9 intersections and the extension of an overtaking lane along the Bruce Highway at Palm Tree Creek.

The project will stretch from the Bruce Highway/Maraju-Yakapari Road/Yakapari-Seaforth Road intersection to Careys Creek, passing through the towns of Kuttabul and Mount Ossa. This section of highway connects many small rural communities with important services as well as providing an important link between major population centres in Queensland.

The Bruce Highway intersections being upgraded in the package include:

  • Maraju-Yakapari Road/Yakapari-Seaforth Road
  • Tweedies Road
  • Guimellis Road
  • Pyms Road
  • Zunkers Road
  • McGills Road
  • Watts Road
  • Geeburga-Buthurra Road
  • Buthurra Station Road.

In addition to these works, Town Entry Treatments will also be applied at Farleigh, The Leap and Kuttabul. The Town Entry Treatments will involve the installation of signage and road marking at the entry points of the towns in order to reduce vehicles speeding through rural towns.

The project will result in:

  • upgrading the existing road to improve driver safety, freight efficiency and heavy vehicle management through pavement widening and resurfacing
  • installation of audio tactile line marking will further assist driver fatigue
  • upgrading the intersections to reduce potential rear-end incidents
  • installation of safety barriers to reduce potential for vehicles veering off the road.
