Bruce Highway Upgrade Package: Babinda intersection upgrade


The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) is progressing a project to upgrade the intersection of the Bruce Highway and Munro Street at Babinda.

TMR conducted extensive consultation in the planning phase of the project with all the community feedback considered in the final design of the intersection.

The project will improve safety for all road users and offers economic benefits for the community through improved travel reliability.


The $3.8 million Babinda Intersection Upgrade is part of the 15-year Bruce Highway Upgrade Program, a $12.6 billion program of works to improve safety, flood resilience and capacity along the Bruce Highway from Brisbane to Cairns. The program is jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland governments, with the Australian Government contributing up to $10 billion and the Queensland Government contributing up to $2.6 billion.

Project info

The upgrade will include:

  • signalisation of the intersection
  • new signal-controlled pedestrian crossings
  • pedestrian safety fencing near the North Coast Rail Line
  • provision for cyclists
  • an additional guardrail
  • roadway lighting upgrade.

The posted speed limit will remain at 60km/h and vehicle activated signage will be installed on both the northern and southern approaches to reinforce the speed limit through the intersection
