Bruce Highway Upgrade Package: Innisfail-Japoon Road intersection upgrade

Overview:

The $3.9 million Innisfail-Japoon Road intersection upgrade project is part of the Bruce Highway Safety Upgrade Package and is jointly funded by the State and Federal Governments.

A $447,000 upgrade to the River Avenue cycleway will be carried out in conjunction with this project.

Location:

Intersection of Bruce Highway and Innisfail-Japoon Road (locally known as River Avenue) south of Innisfail.

Bruce Highway near Scullen Avenue and Hadrell Park.

Completion:

Construction is expected to be completed late 2019, weather permitting.

Benefits:

When constructed, the new intersection is expected to improve safety for road users with an upgrade of the intersection and installation of signalised right turn.

The work will also include drainage and pavement improvements at the McGowan Drive roundabout.

Supplier:

The works will be undertaken by RoadTek.

Funding:

The $3.9 million project is jointly funded Australian and Queensland Governments as part of the Bruce Highway Upgrade Program – Bruce Highway Safety Package.

The $447,000 cycleway project is fully funded by the Queensland Government as part of the Active Transport Program.

Project info

The Innisfail intersection upgrade package includes the following works:

  • Installation of a fully controlled right turn with arrows, re-alignment of the existing right-turn to increase storage and modification of the left turn from Innisfail-Japoon Road to Bruce Highway.
  • Pavement works to improve surface drainage issues and treatments to eliminate wet surface crashes at the intersection of Bruce Highway and McGowan Drive.
  • Drainage and pavement improvement works at the approach and exit of the roundabout on Innisfail-Japoon Road.

The cycleway works include:

  • an upgrade of the existing pathways and installation of additional pathway and installation of new stairs and a bicycle wheeling ramp at each end of Centenary Bridge.
  • the installation of a pedestrian refuge and associated lighting on the Bruce Highway near Hadrell Park.
